PHILOSOPHY OF NAMA-TATTVA 1. Padma Purana (CC. Mad. 22. 113) (Brhat sahasra nama stotra) smartavyo satatam visnur vismartavyo na jatucit sarve vidhi-nisedhah syur etavyor eva kinkarah Translation: Krsna is origin of Lord Visnu. He should always be remembered and never forgotten at any time. All the rules and prohibitions mentioned in the sastras should be the servants of those two principles. 2. CC. Mad. 20. 122 maya-mugdha jivera nahi svatah krsna-jnana jivere krpaya kaila krsna veda-purana Translation: The conditioned soul cannot revive his Krsna consciousness by his own effort. But out of causeless mercy, Lord Krsna compiled the Vedic literature and its supplements, the Puranas. 3. CC. Mad. 6. 178 bhagavan-`sambandha', bhakti-`abhidheya' haya prema-`prayojana', vede tina-vastu kaya Translation: The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the central point of all relationships, acting in devotional service to Him is one's real occupation, and the attainment of love of Godhead is the ultimate goal of life. These three subject matters are described in Vedic literature. 4. CC. Mad. 20. 130 sarvajnera vakye mula-dhana anubandha sarva-sastre upadese,`sri-krsnera'-sambandha Translation: By the words of the astrologer, the poor man's connection with the treasure was established. Similarly, Vedic literature advises us that our real connection is with Sri Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. 5. CC. Mad. 20. 139 ataeva `bhakti'-krsna-praptyera upaya `abhidheya' bali' tare sarva-sastre gaya Translation: The conclusion is that devotional service is the only means to approach the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This system is therefore called abhidheya. This is the verdict of all revealed scriptures. 6. CC. Mad. 20. 142 daridrya-nasa, bhava-ksaya, -premera `phala' naya prema-sukha-bhoga-mukhya prayojana haya Translation: The goal of love of Godhead is not to become materially rich or free from material bondage. The real goal is to be situated in devotional service to the Lord and to enjoy transcendental bliss. 7. CC. Mad. 20. 143 veda-sastre kahe sambandha, abhidheya, prayojana krsna, krsna-bhakti, prema, -tina maha-dhana Translation: In Vedic literatures, Krsna is the central point of attraction, and His service is our activity. To attain the platform of love of Krsna is life's ultimate goal. Therefore Krsna, Krsna's service and love of Krsna are the three great riches of life. 8. 7 points of Sambandha: a. to know the ontology of Krsna b. to be fully aware of different potencies of Krsna c. to have the knowledge of rasa-tattva d. to know the characteristics of unalloyed soul e. to know how soul gets entanglement in samsara f. to know the process of how to get rid of maya g. to know the philosophy of unthinkable simultaneous distinction and non-distinctionin between Bhagavan and jiva. 9. CC. Mad. 25. 98 cari-veda-upanisade yata kichu haya tara artha tana vyasa karila sancaya Translation: Vyasadeva collected whatever Vedic conclusions were in the four Vedas and 108 Upanisads and placed them in the codes of the Vedanta-sutra. 10. CC. Mad. 25.99 yei sutre yei rk-visaya-vacana bhagavate sei rk sloke nibandhana Translation: In Vedanta-sutra, the purpose of all Vedic knowledge is explained, and in Srimad Bhagavatam the same purpose has been explained in eighteen thousand verses. 11. CC. Mad. 25. 100 ataeva brahma-sutrera bhasya--sri-bhagavata bhagavata-sloka, upanisat kahe `eka' mata Translation: That which is explained in the verses of Srimad-Bhagavatam and in the Upanisads serves the same purpose. 12. Garuda Purana (CC. Mad. 25. 143-144) artho'yam brahma-sutranam bharatartha-vinirnayah gayatri-bhasya-rupo'sau vedartha-paribrmhitah purananam sama-rupah saksad-bhagavatoditah dvadasa-skandha-yukto'yam sata-viccheda-samyutah grantho 'stadasa-sahasrah srimad-bhagavatabhidhah Translation: The meaning of the Vedanta-sutra is present in Srimad-Bhagavatam. The commentary of the Brahma-gayatri is also there and fully expanded with all Vedic knowledge. Srimad-Bhagavatam is the supreme Purana, and it was compiled by the Supreme Personality of Godhead in His incarnation as Vyasadeva. There are twelve cantos, 335 chapters and eighteen thousand verses. 13. (a). CC. Mad. 25. 94. pranavera yei artha gayatrite sei haya brahma narade sei upadesa kaila Translation: Whatever was spoken by the Supreme Personality of Godhead to Lord Brahma in the four verses of Srimad-Bhagavatam, was also explained to Narada by Lord Brahma. (b). CC. Mad. 25. 95 narada sei artha vyasere kahila `suni' veda-vyasa mane vicara karila Translation: Whatever Lord Brahma told was again epolained by Narada Muni to Vyasadeva. Vyasadeva later considered these instructions in his mind. (c). SB 2. 9. 33-34 (Catuh sloki Bhagavatam) aham evasam evagre nanyad yat sad-asat param pascad aham yad etac ca yo 'vasisyeta so 'smy aham Translation: Brahma, it is I, Personality of Godhead, who was existing before the creation, when there was nothing but Myself. Nor was there the material nature, the cause of this creation. That which you see now is also I, the Personality of Godhead, and after annihilation what remains will also be I, the Personality of Godhead. rthe 'rtham yat pratiyeta na pratiyeta catmani tad vidyad atmano mayam yatha bhaso yatha tamah Translation: O Brahma, whatever appears to be of any value, if it is without relation to Me, has no reality. Know it as My illusory energy, that reflection which appears to be in darkness. yatha mahanti bhutani bhutesuccavacesv anu pravistany apravistani tatha tesu na tesv aham Translation: O Brahma, please know that the universal eleme nts enter into the cosmos and at the same time do not enter into the cosmos; similarly, I Myself also exist within everything created, and at the same tiem I am outside of everthing. etadvad eva jijnasyam tattva-jijnasunatmanah anvaya-vyatirekabhyam yat syat sarvatra sarvada Translation: A person who is searching after the Supre Absoute Truth, Personality of Godhead, most certainly searcah for it up to this, in all circumstances, in all space and time, and both directly and indirectly. 14. CC. Adi. 7. 146 sambandha, abhidheya, prayojana nama ei tina artha sarva-sutre paryavasana Translation: One's relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, activities of that relationship, and the ultimate goal of life [to develop love of God] - these three subjects are explained in every code of the Vedanta-sutra, for they form the culmination of the entire Vedanta philosophy. 15. 9 Prameyas sri madhva praha visnum paratamam akhilamnyavedyancca visvam satyam bhedasca jivan hari carana jushastharatamyanca tesam moksam visnvanghrimlabham tadamalabhajanam tasya hetum pramanam pratyaksaditrayanchetyupadisati harih krsnacaitanyacandrah Translation: Sri Madhva has said that Lord Visnu is the highest substance, and is to be known through all the revelations, that the universe is real and so also are real the differences that exist therein; that the jivas are all servants of the Lord and are real, and so also are real the differences that exist between them. That salvation (Moksa) consists in obtaining the feet of Visnu; that the cause of getting this release is worshipping Him with purity of heart, without desiring fruit, and that the proofs are three - perception, inference, and sacred testimony. SB 1. 1. 2 dharmah projjhita-kaitava'tra pramo nirmatsaranam satam vedyam vastavam atra vastu sivadam tapa-trayonmulanam srimad-bhagavate maha-muni-krte kim va parair isvarah sadyo hrdy avarudhyate 'tra krtibhih susrusubhis tat-ksanat Translation: Completely rejecting all religious activities which are materially motivated, the Bhagavata Purana propounds the highest truth, which is understandable by those who are fully pure in heart. The highest truth is reality distinguished from illusion for the welfare of all. Such truth uproots the threefold miseries. This beautiful Bhagavatam, compiled by the great sage Vyasadeva [in his maturity], is sufficient in itself for God realization. What is the need of any other scripture? As soon as one attentively and submissively hears the message of Bhagavatam, by his culture of knowledge the Supreme Lord is established within his heart. 19. Tattva viveka 20. Anmayasutra? 21. SB 1. 1. 14 apannah samsrtim ghoram yan-nama vivaso grnan tatah sadyo vimucyeta yad bibheti svayam bhayam Translation: Living being who are entangled in the complicated meshes of birth and death can be freed immediately by even unconsciously chanting the holy name of Krsna, which is feared by fear personified. 22. CC. Adi. 7. 73 krsna mantra hoite habe samsara mocana krsna-nama haite pabe krsnera carana Translation: Simply by chanting the Holy Name one can obtain freedom from material existence. Indeed, simply by chanting the Hare Krsna one will be able to see the lotus feet of the Lord. 23. SB 11. 14. 20 na sadhayati mam yogo na sankhyam dharma uddhava na svadhyayas tapas tyago yatha bhaktir mamorjita Translation: The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: My dear Uddhava, neither through astanga yoga, not through impersonal monism or an analytical study of Absolute Truth, nor through practice of austerities, nor through charity, nor through acceptance of sannyasa can one satisfy Me as much as one can by developing unalloyed devotional service unto Me. 24. BG 8. 28 vedesu yajnesu tapahsu caiva danesu yat punya-phalam pradistam atyeti tat sarvam idam viditva yogi param sthanam upaiti cadyam Translation: A person who accepts the path of devotional service is not bereft of the results derived from studying the Vedas, performing austere sacrifices, giving charity or pursuing philosophical and frutive activities. Simply by performing devotional service, he attains all these, and at the end he reaches the supreme eternal abode. 25. SB 2. 4. 18 kirata-hunandhra-pulinda-pulkasa abhira-sumbha yavanah khasadayah ye 'nye ca papa yad-apasrayasrayah sudhyanti tasmai prabhavisnave namah Translation: Kirata, Huna, Andhra, Pulinda, Pulkasa, Abhira, Sumbha, Yavana, members if the Khasa races and even others addicted to sinful acts can be purified by taking shelter of the devotees of the Lord, due to His being the supreme power. I beg to offer my respectful obeisances unto Him. 26. (quote) CC Adi. 7. 71 (source unknown) rg-vedo 'tha yajur-vedah sama vedo 'py atharvanah adhitas tena yenoktam harir-ity aksara-dvayam Translation: A person who chants the two syllables Ha-ri has already studied 4 Vedas-Sama, Rk, Yajuh and Atharva. 27. trayo vedah sad-angani chandamsi vividhah surah sarvam astaksarantahstham yac canyad api van-mayam sarva vedanta-sararthah samsararnava-taranah Translation: The essence of all Vedic knowledge - comprehending 3 kinds of Vedic activity (karma-kanda, jnana kanda, upasana kanda), the chandah or Vedic hymns, and the process for satisfying the demigods, is included in the 8 syllables Hare Krsna Hare Krsna. This is the reality of Vedanta. The chanting of the Holy Name is the only means to cross the ocean of nescience. 28. Mahabharata (Visnu-sahasra-nama-stotra) suvarna-varno hemango varangas candanangadi sannyasa-krc chamah santo nistha-santi-parayanah Translation: The Lord (in the incarnation of Gaurasundara) has golden complexion. Indeed, His entire body, which is very nicely constituted, is like molten gold. Sandalwood pulp is smeared all over His body. He will take the fourth order of spiritual life (sannyasa) and will be very self-controlled. He will be distinguished from Mayavadi sannyasis in that He will be fixed in devotional service and will spread the sankirtana movement. 29. CC Adi. 1. 4 anarpita-carim cirat karunayavatirnah kalau samarpayitum unnatojjvala-rasam sva-bhakti-sriyam harih purata-sundara-dyuti-kadamba-sandipitah sada hrdaya-kandare sphuratau vah saci-nandana Translation: May that Lord, who is known as the son of Srimati Sacidevi, be transcendentally situated in the innermost chambers of your heart. Resplendent with the radiance of molten gold, He has appeared in the age of Kali by His causeless mercy to bestow what no incarnation ever offered before: the most sublime and radiant spiritual knowledge of the mellow of His service. 30. SB 11. 5. 32 krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam sangopangastra-parsadam yajnaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi su-medhasah Translation: In age of Kali, intelligent persons perform congregational chanting to worship the incarnation of Godhead who constantly sings the names of Krsna. Although His complexion is not blackish, He is Krsna Himself. He is accompanied by His associates, servants, weapons and confidential companions. 31. Brhad Naradiya Purana (38. 126) harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha Translation: In this age of quarrel and hypocrisy, the only means of deliverance is chanting of the holy name of the Lord. There is no other way. There is no other way. There is no other way. 32. Kalisantarana Upanisad: hare krsna hare krsna krsna krsna hare hare hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare ity sodasakam namnam kali-kalmasa-nasanam natah parataropayah sarva-vedesu drsyate Translation: "hare krsna hare krsna krsna krsna hare hare/ hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare" - these 16 names composed of 32 syllables are the only means to countract the evil effects of Kali-Yuga. In all the Vedas it is seen that to cross the ocean of nescience there is no alternative to the chanting of Holy Name.
