Once, when Janaka Maharaja was on tour he saw on the path, Astavakra (a great saint who had eight bends in his body). Janaka Maharaja dismounted his horse and payed his long obeisances to him. Seeing the sages difficult condition, the king thought within his mind distressfully how the Supreme Lord has created his body because the sage was deformed in eight differnt parts of his body. When the sage would walk, it was seen that it was difficut because he was bent in eight different places. Since he was bent in eight differnt places, his father gave him the name Astavakra, but he was greatly knowledgeable in the science of self realization and expert in transcendental education. Due to his transcendental knowledge, he could understand the hateful mind of the king and because he was a great saintly king, Astavakra soberly spoke, "O king, just as if a temple is built round, the sky will not become round. If the temple is built crooked, the sky will not become crooked. Similarly, if the body is deformed, the soul, the occupier of the body cannot be deformed because the body and soul are not made of the same materials. The soul is eternal and the body is perishible. Therefore O king, those who are situated in knowledge see everyone as spiritual souls and part of the Supreme Lord and those who are in ignorance see the body only. Therefore I request you to give up your bodily consciousness and come conscious of the soul. If you do so, the hatred you have within will be removed. Hearing the words of sage, KIng Janaka developed a desire to achieve the science of self-realization, therefore, he prayed to the sage, O sage, please come and purify my house, remove the doubts of my mind and give me self realization. The sage accepted the prayers of the King and reached the palace of him. By achieving the knowledge of Astavakra, the king achieved the realization of transcendence. He fearfully cries like a frog which is in the mouth of a serpent. AYAH PASENA KALASYA SNEHA PASENA BANDHUBHIH ATMANAM KRSYANAMASYA NA KHALU ASTI PARAYANAM (SIVA-GITA) At the time of death, a sinful living entity is being caught by the ropes of the messengers of death, but on the other side, he is being caught by the rope of affection of his family members, so he is being pulled from both sides (one side from the messengers of death and the other side the family members), but no one can relieve him from death. NARASYA BANDHANA ARTHAYA SRNKHALA STRI PRAKIRTITA LOHA BADDHO'PI MUCYETA STRI BADDHO NAIVA MUCYATE (DEVI-BHAGAVATA) The woman is said to be the greatest shackle for the man. A person who is put in iron shackles can free himself, but anyone who is caught and tied by the rope of affection for a woman can not be released. In this regard, there is a history. One young man took to spiritual life and became a sanyasi and in due course of time, he began a tour of places of pilgrimage. On the path he saw a marriage party coming. Since that sanyasi did not know what it was, he asked someone. A person replied, saying that it was a marriage party. Then he asked who was mounted on the horse with a decorated body. He was told that it was a boy who was going to marry a girl. Then he asked what will happen after they are married. Then the man replied, that when the wife comes to his home, they will both enjoy copulation together, then the woman will get children. Hearing this, the sanyasi proceded further. On the path, there was a well and a tree. Since he was tired, he fell asleep under the tree which was near the well. He dreamed that he had been married and was sleeping with his wife. When the woman said please move a little further, then he roles a little distance from her and thus he fell into the well. When the village people heard the noise caused by his falling into the well, they came running a took him out of the well. The village people asked him who made him fall into the well. He replied, in a dream I saw a woman who asked me to move further, and she made me fall into the well. I really do not know what condition a man falls in when he is actually married to a woman. Therefore, the essence is, for an intelligent person, a woman is actually a hellish planet. VISAYA ASA MAHAPASAT YO VIMUKTAH SUDUSTYAJAM SA EKAH KALPATE MUKTYE NA ANYE SAT SASTRA-VEDINAH (VIVEKA-CUDAMANI) Woman, son and wealth, etc. are great shackles from which it is very difficult to be freed from. Any person who is free from such shackles is liberated, but a person who knows six philosofies, but is caught with such shackles, is unable to be liberated. Both of these are certainly unavoidable by all. GURU LOBHI, SISA LALACI, DONON KHELAI DANVA DONON DUBE VAPADE , BAITHA PATTHAR KINAVA (KAVIR DASA) If the spiritual master is greedy and the disciples have unlimited sensual desires, then both make take initiation together with promises, but actually they are situated in the material world just as a person who is sitting on a boat made out of rock and sink into the material ocean. BANDHE KO BANDHA MILAI, CHUTAI KAUNA UPAYA SEVA KARA NIRBANDHA KI, PALA MAI DEYA CHUDAYA (KAVIR DASA) If one shackled person reaches another shackled person how can he be relieved. In other words, if a material desirous person reaches a material desirous spiritual master, how can he be liberated? Therefore, one should reach a liberated person who can liberate him within moments. VASANA DVIBIDHA PROKTA SUDDHA CA MALINA TATHA MALINA JANMA HETUH SYAT SUDDHA JANMA VINASINI (VALMIKI RAMAYANA) There are two kinds of knowledge. One is called pure knowledge and another one is dirty. Dirty knowledge is the cause of ones rebirth whereas purified knowledge stops the rebirth. CINTAYA JAYATE DUHKAM NA ANYATHA ITI NISCAYI TAYA HINAH SUKHI SANTAH SARVATRA SALITA SPRHAH (ASTAVAKRA-GITA 11/5) Within this world, anxieties are the cause for a person's frustration. Therefore, for a person who understands this and wants to become peaceful and happy, he should become free from anxiety in all circumstances. MOKSO VISAYA VAIRASYAM BANDHO VAISAYIKO RASAH ETAVADEVA VIJNANAM TATHECCHASI TATHA KURU (ASTAVAKRA-GITA 15/2) Detachment from sense gratification is liberation and engagement in sense gratification, etc. is bondage. This is actual knowledge. Now whatever one wants, he can do it. HARO YADY UPADESTA TE HARIH KAMALAJO'PI VA TATHAPI NA TAVA SVASTHYAM SARVA VISMARANAD RTE (ASTAVAKRA-GITA 16/11) If one is reached even by Lord Siva or Lord Hari or even Lord Brahma, if one does not give up the desire for sense gratification, he cannot be liberated or be peaceful. SATKARA MANA PUJARTHAM DANDA KASAYA DHARANAH SA SANYASI NA VAKTAVYAH SANYASI JNANA TATPARAH (NITI SASTRA) Due to respect, prestige or worship, if a person wears saffron clothes and takes sanyasa, he cannot be called a sanyasi because a sanyasi is a person who is engaged in acquiring the science of self realization seriously. NA JATU VISAYAH KE'PI SVARAMAM HARSAYANTY AMI SALLAKI PALLAVA PRITAM IVA IBHAM NIMBA PALLAVA (ASTAVAKRA-GITA 17/3) No kinds of sense gratificatory objects can satisfy a self realized soul, just as an elephant who has become happy by eating sallaki (a kind of sweet tree) leaves, cannot be satisfied by eating neem leaves. There was one saintly person who lived for a long time in the palace of a king. One day that saintly person died. Seeing this, the king also died. On the outskirts of that same city, there was a saintly person living and near him there was a man sitting. That saintly person started lauphing by himself and the person who was sitting near him asked, "O saintly person, why are you lauphing yourself without any reason?" He replied, "I never lauph without any reasons but there was a saintly person living with the king and he died and seeing this, the king also died, but the king went to heaven where as the saint went to hell because the king was thinking of how to satisfy the saintly person and so he always remained detached from his worldly affairs and he went to heaven. But the saintly person's mind was always engaged in enjoying the royal situation and thus he was bereft of the science of self realization and thus he went to hell. The conclusion is that no matter how much one is externally detached from worldly things, one must ultimately be detached from within and be attached to the Supreme Lord. SANURAGAM STRIYAM DRSTVA MRTYUM VA SAMUPASTHITAM AVIHVALA MANAH SVASTHO MUKTA EVA MAHASAYAH (ASTAVAKRA-GITA 17/14) Any person who does not become disturbed when an enjoying young lady sits near or he sees death near to him and remains content, peaceful, he said to be a liberated person.
