Suffering of a sadhaka Disciple to guru: I am religious and God fearing person. Never do I think of hurting anyone. However in return what I am getting is nothing but troubles and more troubles. My neighbour who is a not only a drunkard and corrupt person never worships God too. However he is richer than me and has no troubles at all. Why is God so unjust? Why does God not take care of his devotees? Guru to disciple: Tell me which is of more use to an engineer – ordinary steel or hardened steel? Disciple: Hardened steel. Guru: How do you make hardened steel? Disciple: By repeated heating and cooling of ordinary steel. Guru: Can you harden steel without subjecting it to heating and cooling it? Disciple: No not possible at all. Guru: So also in case of human beings. God subjects us to trials and tribulations with a view that we will become strong. We can grow only by becoming stronger. The troubles and sorrows that you experience is like heating and cooling the steel is subject too. A hardened person will always have more capacity and strength to face life as compared to a weaker person who does not experience troubles. Hence God is more just to you as he is forcing you to acquire the strength for your growth only. Your neighbour has been having an easy life all along and he certainly cannot withstand but will collapse even when a small misfortune strikes him (as it will). Whereas you will have the courage and strength to bear even the mightiest tsunami.
